Geocaching

There are many fun things to do in St George.  For walking - hiking - 4 wheel enthusiasts, try geocaching!

Never heard of it? Neither did I, until I came to St. George.  A neighbor told us about it.  Geocaching is a term that stands for a sanctioned website dedicated to the rules, regulations, and location for caches that are stored all over the world.  Go to the websight, www.geocaching.com, and plug in a zip code.

You will find available caches listed from closest, to farthest away.  Persons or Groups, register a cache, which meets the standards of the Geocaching rules.  They bury/hide it and give you general directions, and GPS coordinates.  YOU MUST HAVE A GPS SYSTEM - small handhelds are preferrable.  In St George and the surrounding area there are many caches.  Most of them are in beautiful areas, like near petroglyphs, or dinosaur tracks.  See other sites below: Petroglyphs, and Fun with Friends!

Cache's contain trinkets that you bring and exchange.  Be sure and log it in the book!  If you find the cache in bad condition, or that it has been vandalized, be sure and notify the geocache websight.  Hitchhikers are small unique tags that can be purchased through the site.  They are highly regarded among cachers, and are removed and then placed in a different location.  The person moving the hitchhiker logs the removal and replacement on the websight - that way the original owner can follow his hitchiker all over the world!

It's fun, it's free (except for the gps purchase), and the exercise is the added bonus!

Give it a try!
